François Arago, the French physicist and astronomer, is the subject of this photographic print of a bust, though the caption card gives no date and does not name the sculptor. Arago directed the Paris Observatory and studied the nature of light. In 1839 he presented Daguerre's photographic process to the French Academy of Sciences, which tied his name to the early history of photography. As a republican politician in the government of 1848, he also pushed for an end to slavery in the French colonies.
