Whittier is shown seated at a table, turned slightly to the right, in a portrait taken when he was 73, which places it around 1880, though the caption card gives no date. By then he was among the best-known American poets of his day, admired for works such as *Snow-Bound* (1866) and for his long career as an abolitionist and a member of the Religious Society of Friends. The plain, unadorned setting suits a writer who was known for modest, direct habits. The portrait is a useful record of how he looked in his later years, after his most famous poems had made his name.
