This lithograph reproduces a portrait of John Adams from a series that Gilbert Stuart painted for the Doggett brothers, Boston booksellers. The print shows the second president, who served from 1797 to 1801 and lived until 1826, at an age when his face had taken on the lined, deliberate look of his later years. Its date is uncertain, but it falls in the 1820s, when lithography had become a popular way to spread likenesses of national figures. Prints like this one carried the image of the Revolutionary generation to a wider public.
