Satan is shown at Booth's side, urging the actor toward killing President Abraham Lincoln, a moral framing of the conspiracy that this lithograph makes unusually direct. John L. Magee published it in Philadelphia, and the record notes that he probably drew it himself. Magee's shop issued a run of political caricatures during the Civil War, and this print reflects how many Northern viewers understood the plot in 1865: less as a partisan matter than as a sin the devil had put into a man's head. Its date, about 1865, places it in the year Lincoln was shot at Ford's theater in April.
