Three Piegan men, identified in the title as chiefs, sit together in this portrait made around 1900. The Piegan, known today as the Piikani, are part of the Blackfoot Confederacy of the northern Plains in Montana and Alberta, and Edward S. Curtis photographed many of the region's peoples during his long effort to record Native American life before many traditions faded. The picture was later published as plate 209 in a supplementary volume of *The North American Indian*, Curtis's multivolume work issued between 1907 and 1930. Curtis often posed his sitters in traditional dress and chose subjects he considered leaders, so the image reflects his selection and staging as much as the lives of the men themselves.
