Kendall's Amboline for the Hair was a proprietary hair preparation, and this engraving advertised it. The record dates the print to about 1863 and credits Kendall & Co. with the copyright. In the 1860s, American makers of patent medicines and toiletries relied heavily on engraved advertisements, labels, and trade cards to build recognition for their products, and federal rules on what those products could claim were largely absent. Images like this one, which catalogers filed under hair styles and hair advertisements, show how closely the trade tied a promised appearance to a bottle on the shelf.
