Moonlight settles over the rivers where the Potomac and Shenandoah meet below the town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. This steel engraving by R. Hinshelwood reproduces a painting by Granville Perkins and appeared in volume one of *Picturesque America*, the illustrated survey edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton & Co. around 1872 to 1874. By then the town was better known for its federal armory and for John Brown's raid in 1859 than for its scenery, so the book's romantic nighttime view offered readers a gentler picture of the place. Perkins was a Baltimore-trained painter, and his atmospheric treatment of light on water is worth noticing.
