Fire consumed much of Moscow beginning on September 14, 1812, the day Napoleon's army entered the city, and this reproduction of a sepia drawing depicts that scene. Russian authorities had largely emptied the city, and the blaze spread through its wooden buildings over several days, leaving the invaders without shelter or supplies. Their long retreat westward through the bitter autumn and winter of 1812 became one of the great disasters of the Napoleonic wars. The record dates this reproduction to about 1894, some eight decades after the events, so it reflects a later artist's interpretation.
