This print shows the execution of Nathan Hale, a Connecticut schoolteacher who served as a captain in the Continental Army, on September 22, 1776, in New York, which British forces had recently taken. Hale volunteered for a spy mission behind British lines on Long Island, was captured, and was hanged without a trial. He is remembered for his reported last words, that he regretted having only one life to give for his country. Because the print dates from about 1913, more than a century after the event, it shows how later artists imagined a patriot's final moments rather than offering a firsthand record.
