The print takes its subject from the Declaration of Independence, which the Continental Congress adopted on July 4, 1776, formally announcing the thirteen colonies' break from Great Britain. Thomas Jefferson drafted the text, and Congress revised it before approval. The caption card records no date for the print itself, so it may be a later reproduction of the 1776 document, a common practice as the Declaration became a national symbol. Many delegates did not sign the engrossed copy until August 2, 1776, a detail worth remembering when the adoption date is printed as the document's date.
