The engraving shows the Continental Army's withdrawal from Long Island, the night of August 29, 1776, after the British victory at the Battle of Long Island a few days earlier. Under cover of darkness and fog, Washington's troops were ferried across the East River to Manhattan, a move that saved the army from being trapped. Henry Bryan Hall engraved the scene from a drawing by McNevin, and G.P. Putnam & Co. of New York issued it in 1856, when illustrated histories of the Revolution were popular. The print is worth studying as a mid-19th-century view of a 1776 event, shaped as much by its period as by the original moment.
