The title names a specific engagement: an 1862 fight for Baton Rouge, the Louisiana capital, which Union forces had occupied since the spring. Confederate troops under John C. Breckinridge attacked the city in early August to try to retake it, and the Union defenders, under Brig. Gen. Thomas Williams, held on, though Williams was killed in the fighting. Currier & Ives issued many hand-colored lithographs of Civil War battles for a home audience eager for news, and this one shows how the public was taught to picture the war. Its catalog entry, from Gale Research's 1983 raisonné, helps place it among the firm's wartime output.
