Few images from Shiloh show the aftermath as bluntly as this wood engraving of dead horses burning near the Peach Orchard, a spot where fighting raged on April 6 and 7, 1862. The battle at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, left thousands dead and wounded on both sides, and the animals killed in artillery and cavalry action added to the grim work of cleanup. Burning carcasses was a common way to limit disease and the stench in warm spring weather. The engraving appeared in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on May 17, 1862, where readers far from the front relied on such pictures to see scenes they could not visit.
