Near Marysville, where the caption places this dredge on the Yuba River or possibly another nearby stream, a floating machine of this size could work the gravel bed day and night. Dredges like it dug with a chain of buckets, washed the material through sluices on board, and discharged the leftover tailings behind them. By about 1908, dredging had become a major way to recover gold from California's river gravels, partly because the 1884 Sawyer Decision had restricted hydraulic mining, which had buried valley farmland under debris. The record's details are unverified, so treat the exact location with some caution.
