The Palisades are a long line of dark, columnar cliffs along the Hudson's western shore, and this view looks at the river's banks where the rock drops steeply toward the water. Around 1903, scenes like this were widely reproduced as photoprints for sale to travelers and households, and this one was copyrighted by A. Loeffler of Tompkinsville, a Staten Island community. The cliffs had long drawn sightseers on river steamers heading north from New York Harbor. The caption record is old and not fully verified, so the exact vantage point and date should be treated with some caution.
