Henry Truvillion and his wife stand together in a garden near Newton, Texas, a small town in the state's far east, and the picture is one of the few in this set that places a folk musician at home rather than on a porch or stage. The Lomax collection of folk musician photographs was assembled by John and Alan Lomax, who traveled the South recording and documenting Black and white singers for the Library of Congress during the 1930s and 1940s. Photographs like this one add a personal layer to those recordings, showing the families and everyday settings behind the music. The record dates the print only to between 1934 and 1950.
