Captain Henry Duberly and his wife, Frances, appear together in this salted paper print, one of the portraits Roger Fenton made around the British camps in the Crimea in 1855. Frances Duberly, known in the press as "Mrs. Duberly," followed her husband's cavalry regiment to the peninsula, an unusual choice for an officer's wife, and she later wrote a memoir of her time with the army. The pose and dress suggest the easy confidence of the officer class at the front, while the sitters' presence in the camp gives the picture its documentary value. Fenton's Crimean work is among the earliest sustained photographic coverage of a war.
