Few crew portraits from Roald Amundsen's Arctic voyage aboard the *Maud* have survived in such a direct form, and this one shows the men who sailed the ship rather than the scenery around it. The *Maud* was built to be lifted by pack ice rather than crushed by it, and Amundsen used it for a long drift across the Arctic Ocean off the Siberian coast, hoping the current would carry the ship across the polar region. The caption card gives no date, so the photograph is best placed within that broader expedition period, when polar exploration relied heavily on small crews enduring long winters in the ice.
