The caption places this scene near Metz, the fortress city in Lorraine that was held by Germany from 1871 until 1918, and names Lieutenant von Scheele as the observer in the German aircraft that brought down a French airman. Downed aircraft and captured crews were a common subject of wartime photography, and in 1914 aerial combat was still new, with two-seat machines carrying a pilot and an observer who fired on enemy planes. The caption data is unverified, so the date of "1914?" and the exact circumstances remain uncertain. The print comes from a photo album assembled by Hermann Göring, himself a WWI airman, which is a useful clue to how such images were gathered and preserved.
