A seated portrait of the photographer Clarence H. White himself, shown in a suit, this print is a rare look at the man behind many soft-focus pictorial images. White (1871-1925) was a leading member of the Photo-Secession, the movement that argued photography could be a fine art and not just a record of facts. This example is printed in platinum with a gum overlay, a labor-intensive process that let pictorialists brush tone and softness into the image by hand. Such prints show how far photographers of the 1900s were willing to go to make their work look like painting.
