Ely, the White Pine County seat in eastern Nevada, grew around copper mining and the railroad, and this outdoor scene of men seated on the ground over a card game was recorded there around 1910. The caption, "Lucky at cards," frames the moment as a light, colorful incident, though the record gives no names or details about the players. Card games had spread widely among Indigenous communities in the Great Basin by this time. Photographs like this one often reflect the outsider's gaze as much as the scene itself, so the composition is worth reading with that in mind.
