The subject here is the summer lodges of the Umpqua, a people of the Umpqua River valley in what was then Oregon Territory, rather than a general view of Native camps. The wood engraving ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in April 1858, when the Umpqua and neighboring groups were under growing pressure from settlers and federal treaty policy. Illustrations like this one were usually engraved from sketches or secondhand descriptions, so they show what editors and readers in the East expected Western life to look like as much as what the camps were actually like. Viewers should keep that distance in mind when reading the scene.
