Few pictures name a village so precisely. This wood engraving places an Umpqua settlement half a mile below Fort Umpqua, the Hudson's Bay Company post on the Umpqua River in southwestern Oregon. *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* printed it on April 24, 1858, giving eastern readers a view of a region most had never seen. Engravings like this were usually cut by staff craftsmen from sketches or secondhand accounts, so the lodges and figures show what the publisher imagined a Native camp to be, and they are best read as a record of that expectation.
