Casco Bay's Cushing's Island, off Portland, Maine, is the setting here, and the view looks across the water toward Fort Levett and the ledge that carries the Ram Island light. Fort Levett was one of the coastal batteries built to guard Portland Harbor in the decades after the Civil War, when the United States was modernizing its seacoast defenses. The Detroit Photographic Company, which issued copyrighted views of American scenery for travelers around the turn of the twentieth century, made pictures like this one as souvenirs of resort destinations. The caption card's details about the photographer's vantage point and date have not been independently verified.
