The Confederate ironclad ram *Albemarle*, built on the Roanoke River in North Carolina, is the subject here, as Harper's Weekly presented her to readers in late 1864. Union sailors had good reason to fear her: in April 1864 she sank the gunboat *Southfield* and supported the Confederate recapture of Plymouth. This engraving ran on December 24, 1864, about two months after Lieutenant William Cushing's torpedo launch destroyed the ship in the Roanoke. The caption card's date of October 31, 1862 does not match the ship's history, so treat it as unverified.
