Few ships are as closely tied to New York's early history as the Half Moon, the vessel Henry Hudson sailed in 1609 while searching for a northwest passage to Asia. Working for the Dutch East India Company, Hudson entered what is now New York Harbor and then took the ship up the river that now bears his name, reaching roughly as far as present-day Albany before turning back. This engraving by S. Hollyer shows that voyage, though its date of about 1909 is unverified and comes from an old caption card. The print reflects how later generations pictured the moment that opened the Hudson Valley to Dutch trade and settlement.
