William Henry Herndon was Abraham Lincoln's law partner in Springfield, Illinois, and later the author of a sharp, detailed account of Lincoln's life that shaped how many people understood the president. This picture is a halftone reproduction of an earlier photoprint made by L.C. Handy Studios, a Washington firm known for portraits of public figures. Scholars later reproduced it in David Donald's 1948 study of Herndon, a book that brought renewed attention to his memories of Lincoln and to the Springfield years they shared.
