A studio portrait by Napoleon Sarony, the New York photographer known for carefully posed likenesses of public figures, shows Union general William Tecumseh Sherman in his later years. The picture dates to about 1888, several years after Sherman retired as General of the Army and long after his 1864 March to the Sea had made him one of the most recognized names in the country. By then he was a celebrity in his own right, and portraits like this one were widely sold and reproduced for a public eager to see the Civil War's leading commanders. The date comes from an older caption card and is unverified, so it should be read as approximate.
