William Boyd Allison (1829-1908) was a Republican senator from Iowa who served in Washington for many years, and this portrait is credited to C.M. Bell of Washington, D.C., a studio known for its formal studio portraits of political and public figures in the late nineteenth century. Allison was a prominent figure in the Senate, chairing key committees and taking part in the tariff and railroad debates of his era. The caption card carries no date, so the sitting itself cannot be placed precisely, but the Bell studio's output suggests a Gilded Age origin.
