This portrait shows William H. Rehnquist, who took his seat on the Supreme Court in 1972 after President Richard Nixon nominated him. Robert S. Oakes made it as a color negative, and it belongs to the Library of Congress's official Court portraits. Rehnquist would go on to serve more than three decades, including as Chief Justice from 1986 until his death in 2005, so the picture captures him at the start of that long tenure. Its title refers to 1976 while its date reads 1972, so the year of the sitting is best taken as the earlier one.
