This is a photographic portrait of William Allen Butler (1825-1902), a New York lawyer who is remembered today mainly as a humorist. His satirical poem "Nothing to Wear," published in 1857, mocked a woman's endless complaints about her wardrobe and became one of the most widely quoted comic verses of its era. The record dates the print to around 1902, near the year of Butler's death, though the caption card data is unverified. Portraits from this late stage of a public figure's life often show a man known as much for his legal and literary careers as for his wit.
