A dancer may be the subject here. The bracketed title with a question mark suggests Maude Allen, the American performer who gained fame in Europe in the late 1900s for her interpretation of Salome. The print is a platinum photograph from 1910, signed in pencil on the mount by Clarence H. White, a pictorialist whose soft-focus portraits were central to the Photo-Secession circle. Platinum paper gave such work deep tonal range and velvety grays, suited to the expressive aims of the period. Because the identification is unverified, the sitter's name should be read as a working attribution.
