A portrait of the Very Reverend Felix Varela, D.D., the Cuban-born priest named in the title, shows a man who spent most of his adult life in exile. Varela left Cuba in 1823 because of his opposition to Spanish colonial rule, and from New York he became a leading voice for Cuban independence through his teaching and writing. He died in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1853, the year given for this portrait, which places it near the time of his death. The date and the publisher association come from an unverified shelflist card, so they should be read with some caution.
