Cornelius M. Battey's 1918 portrait of W.E.B. Du Bois, as the caption card credits it, shows the scholar at a point when his public voice was growing. By then he was editor of *The Crisis*, the magazine of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and a leading writer on civil rights, education and Black history. His earlier book *The Souls of Black Folk*, published in 1903, had already established him as one of the most influential thinkers of his generation. The date of c1919 May 31 comes from older catalog data and is approximate, so the 1918 credit is the more reliable anchor.
