Howard Hughes, the film producer, record-setting aviator and industrialist, is the subject here, and the caption card ties the portrait to aviation, the field that made him a national figure. Hughes built his reputation in the 1930s by flying his own planes, most famously a 1938 round-the-world flight that set a speed record and turned him into a household name. The studio print is undated beyond a rough 1940s estimate, and it was distributed by Wide World Photos, the news agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of public figures during that era.
