Few pictures show a Montana city street in the middle of a disaster as directly as this stereograph of Broadway in Butte during the fire of September 23, 1905. Butte was then one of the busiest copper-mining centers in the West, so a fire in its commercial district put a great deal of property at risk. Stereo cards like this were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth, and publishers such as William H. Rau sold them widely to readers far from the event. The caption data on the card is unverified, so details of the fire's extent are best checked against other sources.
