A barge loaded with storm victims, bound for burial at sea, is the subject of this view of Galveston, Texas, taken in the days after the hurricane that struck the island on September 8, 1900. The caption card is unverified, but it describes the bodies as buried at sea, a grim step taken when the dead overwhelmed local burial grounds. The storm flooded much of the low-lying island and remains the deadliest natural disaster in United States history, with death toll estimates in the thousands. The photograph was made by W.A. Green, a Galveston photographer.
