Its caption asks, "Well, I hardly know which to take first?", a question that seems to put Uncle Sam at a loss among several new responsibilities. This reproduction of a cartoon from the Boston Globe, dated May 28, 1898, comes from the Spanish-American War, when the United States was weighing what to do with territories it had gained or sought. The record lists Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba as subjects, all places caught up in that expanding American role overseas. The drawing is attributed to "Boz," though that attribution is uncertain, and it reflects the national argument over imperialism that the war brought to the surface.
