Warren G. Harding is the subject here, photographed in November 1920, weeks after voters elected him president over James M. Cox. Harding had spent years as a newspaper publisher in Marion, Ohio, and he was comfortable with reporters, so his early meetings with the press drew journalists eager to learn how the incoming administration would operate. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm whose pictures recorded officials and public events of the period. Its caption information is from old cards and has not been independently verified, so the exact setting is worth confirming.
