Two oxen standing beside a stalled automobile give this pair of stereo views its joke: a tire repair with onlookers on top, and a couple riding a horse past a broken-down car below. Underwood & Underwood sold stereoscopic card views by the thousands around 1907, through agents and subscriptions, and humorous scenes like these were a staple of the trade. Motoring was still new and unreliable, so cartoonish takes on flat tires and breakdowns drew easy laughs from viewers who were watching cars slowly replace horses and oxen on American roads.
