The title, "A poor man loaded with mischief, or matrimony," and its caption, "drawn by Experience; engrav'd by Sorrow," present the picture as a lesson learned the hard way. Published in London in October 1752 by the print seller S. Lyne at the Globe in Newgate Street, it belongs to a busy trade in cheap moral satires on marriage and vice, many owing a debt to William Hogarth. Its listed subjects, including drunkenness and brothels, show how such prints packed several failings into one scene for viewers to read closely.
