Published as a title-page illustration in *Harper's Weekly* in late July 1883, this wood engraving turns to the crowded tenement houses of New York City, where poor families often lived packed into narrow buildings with little light or air. The artist, Thure de Thulstrup, was a Swedish-born illustrator who drew many scenes for the magazine. Images like this helped bring urban poverty before middle-class readers at a time when housing reform was becoming a public concern.
