Clown alley is the name circus performers gave to the cramped backstage area where clowns dressed, painted their faces, and waited for their cues, and Robert Riggs turned that unglamorous space into the subject of this lithograph. Riggs, an American painter and printmaker, was drawn to circus, boxing, and other popular entertainments of his era, and he tended to look past the spangle to the people behind it. The signature in pencil and the one on the stone show that he took part directly in the printing, which was not always true of artists working in the medium.
