Caught mid-gesture, Robert M. La Follette displays the combative stance that earned him the nickname "Fighting Bob." The photograph dates to 1924, when the Wisconsin senator ran for president as the Progressive Party candidate. He had built his reputation on attacks against railroads, monopolies, and what he saw as corporate influence over government, and his forceful stump style drew strong support from farmers and labor groups. He carried Wisconsin that year but finished third nationally, a notable showing for a third-party campaign.
