A pair of clowns performing acrobatics alongside a trapeze act makes this lithograph stand apart from the many circus scenes on the board. The caption card records no date, but the print is signed both on the stone and in pencil, and it is numbered 46, which suggests a limited edition. Clowns and trapeze artists were staples of the American circus in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and lithography was a favored medium for artists who wanted to capture that energy in a fine-art form. The print was acquired through the Pennell Fund, which has supported the Library's print collection.
