Rather than a painted original, this sheet is a stipple engraving, a technique that builds its tones from many small dots, reproducing a portrait of Thomas Jefferson by Rembrandt Peale. The Philadelphia publisher A. Day issued it, and the date is given as around 1801, the year Jefferson took office as the third president. Peale, a son of the painter Charles Willson Peale, made the source painting, and prints like this one spread the new president's likeness beyond the capital. The sheet has been trimmed, and the Library of Congress keeps this copy as a reference print.
