This engraving portrays Thomas Erskine, the Scottish-born barrister who later became 1st Baron Erskine. He rose to prominence as one of the most celebrated courtroom advocates of his day, and in 1792 he defended Thomas Paine against a charge of seditious libel over *The Rights of Man*. Erskine went on to serve as Lord Chancellor in 1806 and 1807. The caption card does not record a date for this print, so it is best understood as a later record of a figure whose public career spanned the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
