Thomas Egerton, who died in 1617, is the sitter in this engraving, which shows a man who held some of the highest legal offices in England. He served as Lord Keeper and then Lord Chancellor under Elizabeth I and James I, presiding over the Court of Chancery and receiving the titles Baron Ellesmere and Viscount Brackley. His tenure included a sharp dispute with Chief Justice Edward Coke over whether equity courts could override common law rulings. The record gives no date for the print, and the initials "B.I." on the caption card are unverified, so the engraver remains uncertain.
