Nathaniel Currier's 1844 lithograph gathers the presidents of the United States onto a single sheet, a subject that appealed to buyers who wanted a patriotic display of national leaders. Currier ran his New York firm under his own name until James Merritt Ives joined him in 1857, and his shop sold prints like this one cheaply to a broad public. The date places the sheet in the year of a hotly contested presidential race, when a gallery of officeholders and their predecessors carried political as well as patriotic meaning. The hand coloring, applied by workers to many copies, gives the sheet its bright tones and was part of what made such prints popular.
