The seal of the United States Supreme Court is a small, carefully composed emblem, and this color reproduction of a drawing preserves its official design in a form that looks crisp on the page. The Court's seal has long been used to authenticate its documents and mark its official business, so a printed version of it carries a certain institutional weight. The record dates the piece to about 1950, a period when the Court was working in the Old Senate Chamber of the Capitol, with the building it would move into in 1935 still fairly recent. The record notes that its data comes from an unverified caption card, so the exact origin of the drawing remains uncertain.
